Biological Control for Fungus Gnats and Western Flower Thrips

Provides excellent control of fungus gnats by eliminating damaging fungus gnat larvae. A single application of NemaShield beneficial nematodes ( Steinernema feltiae) is sufficient for preventing fungus gnat outbreaks or for control in the beginning phase of an outbreak.  
NemaShield is effective in a Western Flower Thrips ( Frankliniella occidentalis) control program for treatment of pupae and pre-pupae. It will also control thrips species that spend a portion of their life cycle in the soil or potting media.

    Introduction

  • turn and shake the bottle or bag gently before use
  • spread material evenly on soil or rockwool blocks
  • do not apply in pothole close to stem to prevent plant damage by storage mites

    Environmental conditions
    Soil must be moist but not too wet, preferably rich in organic matter, with an open structure and minimum temperature of 15°C/59°F.

    Remarks

  • these predatory mites do not enter diapause
  • the product ENTOMITE contains storage mites (Tyrophagus putrescentiae). These may cause slight damage to some crops, particularly when growing conditions are humid or in the presence of large quantities. Always apply ENTOMITE to the soil surface, not on the plant. Test on small scale prior to application in crops where experience is lacking. Or ask your supplier for advice.

    Adults: size to 1 mm, brown

    Mode of action
    Adults and nymphs feed on larvae of sciarid flies and other soil living insects.

    Visual effect
    The mites can be observed in and on the soil and at the base of plant stems. Hypoaspis miles seldom occurs on the plants. Slow but steady reduction of the infestation level will take place.

    LADYBUGS Hippodamia convergens  
    An excellent generalist predator for your garden. Feeds on aphids, adelgids, chinch bugs, asparagus beetle larvae, thrips, alfalfa weevils, bean thrips, grape root worms, Colorado potato beetle larvae, whitefly, and mites, as well as many other soft-bodied insects and eggs.

    Spical Predatory Mites(A. californicus)  
    Spical mites(Amblyseius californicus) are voracious predators of damaging two spotted mites.  Repeat applications every 2-4 weeks- see directions below:
     
    Target
    Two spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) and fruit tree red spider mite (Panonychus ulmi). All stages, preferring younger stages. Predatory mites also survive on other mites and pollen and can survive for a number of weeks without food.

    Introduction

  • in low crops it is possible to distribute SPICAL mechanically by means of the AIRBUG mite blower

    Environmental conditions
    Amblyseius californicus tolerates high temperatures and low humidities.

    Remarks
    Amblyseius californicus tolerates a range of chemical pesticides. Always use SPICAL in conjunction with SPIDEX.

    Mobile stages: transparant white-orange to yellow, droplet shaped, short legs, looks like Amblyseius cucumeris
    Eggs: oblong, transparant to white, attached to hairs along veins on the underside of leaves

    Mode of action
    Adult predatory mites, nymphs and larvae can be found especially on the underside of the leaves, actively searching or waiting for their prey.

    Introduction

    • Sachets already have exit hole
    • hold sachets by the cardboard strip at the top. The predatory mites are easily damaged

     

    Environmental conditions

    Relative humidity should be above 75% and the temperature above 20°C/68°F for some hours of the day. THRIPEX-PLUS contains a strain of Amblyseius cucumeris which is not susceptible to diapause. Therefore the predators can be used all year.

    Remarks

    The product THRIPEX-PLUS contains grain mites (Tyrophagus putrescentiae) and bran. These mites may cause slight damage to some crops, especially when growing conditions are humid and grain mites are present in large numbers. Consult your supplier prior to use. Small field test is recommended on crops or varieties lacking experiences.

    'THRIPEX in vermiculite' is the safest product for sensitive crops.

    Mobile stages: beige-pink, droplet shaped, 'pushed down' position on short legs, often at hidden places like along veins and in the flowers

    Eggs: transparant white, attached to leaf hairs along veins on the underside of leaves

    SPIDEX SPIDER MITE PREDATORS  
    Spidex Mites beneficial insects love to eat harmful Mites. In fact, they reproduce twice as fast as the most harmful Mites. If you release a bottle of Spidex Mites near plants that have harmful Mites, within minutes the Spidex Mites will be on those plants eating the harmful Mites!
